As I’m sure you have seen in the press, there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding what will happen after the 31st January.
Weither for business or pleasure, driving in Europe for British Citizens will change – deal or no deal.
We hope this guidance helps you with what might happen if you are planning on driving in Europe after Brexit – specifically, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
What will I need to drive in Europe?
Should there be a no-deal Brexit, policyholders will require a Green Card as evidence of motor insurance for travel within the European Union and EU approved countries (including Ireland, Andorra, Serbia & Switzerland). You will also need to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) which can be obtained from your local Post Office. Details of which can be found here.
Green Cards
As a precaution, we would recommend that you contact us to request the issue of a Green Card if you are planning on travelling in Europe.
For Bedford Insurance customer, should you require a Green Card, please download the Green Card Application here and return it via email or post at least 14 days prior to travel. This will allow us to send out the necessary documentation in plenty of time. Should you not have received your Green Card 7 days prior to travel, please call us on 020 8543 6347.
The information that we require is as follows:
- Policy Number
- Inclusive dates of travel
- Intended countries of travel
- Purpose of travel
- Vehicle registration (to ensure the vehicle is per that on our records)
- Driver Name (in case an existing additional driver is travelling abroad without the policyholder. Please note that a Temporary Additional Driver cannot be added solely for the duration of a Green Card and would need to be added to the policy permanently).
- Home Address (if a named additional driver in the aforementioned scenario)
- Is a trailer/caravan being towed? If Yes, we shall require the Serial Number, as well as the make/model, to enable us to issue a separate Green Card.
- Where you require the Green Card to be posted to.
At this time, there will be no charge for the issue of a Green Card but we will monitor this in the future depending on the level of requests and administrative work.
